Breaking The Finance Gap: CROWDFUNDx Brings Amy Cortese & Others

Many are awaiting the SEC regulations to come down to enable crowdfunding for businesses on a larger scale, but few fully understand how that will fully play out as we break away from SEC regulations that have governed investment for almost a century.

Once in place, crowdfunding will not replace venture capitalists or angels, but will instead bridge the gap between both the amount of money and time these traditional investment entities can devote to smaller businesses. However, to truly take advantage of new crowdfunding platforms, business owners still need to understand the dynamics of investment and how to work with investors.

“By themselves, of course, a few startups can’t completely democratize finance. But they begin to illuminate what the future of crowdfunding could look like, as the debate continues over a vast widening of the private investor pool.” – Amy Cortese

Amy Cortese has been exploring this topic extensively. Her book, Locavesting: The Revolution in Local Investing and How to Profit From It, looks at how a small shift in investment away from multinationals towards locally-owned enterprises can provide enormous economic and social benefits for all. Many of these smaller companies might be overlooked by VC’s and angels, simply due to the traditional models that govern those fields, however crowdfunding gives them a better chance to succeed.

The debate she references is important. And that’s why Amy will join Jalak Jobanputra, who has an extensive background in successful global investment ventures and now is Founding Partner of FuturePerfect Ventures; Jessica Jackley, one of the founders of Kiva, the first website connecting lenders to borrowers around the world for microcredit loans; Sky Fernandes, who is a venture capitalist at early-stage venture fund Centripetal Capital Partners and has experience with innovative investment structures and investment across industry sectors; and Jonathan Sandlund of The CrowdCafe, a crowdfunding research and resource site. Together the four will explore Why We Invest: Understanding the Risk and Goals of Equity.

From the hour session, you’ll walk away understanding how crowdfunding opens the door to capital, but what is expected in return is still the same as with any investment. Crowdfunding and the technology these platforms use have the potential to benefit everyone –from business owners to larger investors– through market testing, user data, and financial support.

It’s a practical session with serious leading investors and researchers at the helm. Join us for this discussion.
